Fair Trade Shop

Open Wednesday mornings 11.30am -12noon

St Andrew's has been granted 'Fairtrade Church' status.  We use Fair Trade Tea, Coffee and Sugar for all events and meetings run by the Church.

The shop stocks an exciting range of earrings, necklaces, brooches and bracelets, clothing a wide variety of food, beverages and stationery.

African producers

As the eyes of the world have been on Africa we thought we’d focus on some of our African producers for both crafts and foods. As thirst quenchers we have three types of juice (orange, tropical and apple), several blends of African tea (including decaff), and tasty coffee beans (dark or medium roast); if you need a little sweetener there’s white granulated sugar too! All four Geobar flavours contain South African raisins, as do the fruit, chocolate and nut cookies; the dark Genoa cake is packed full of juicy South African sultanas. The fruit and nut and the exotic fruit mueslis contain African ingredients, and if you would like to try the latter, we do have small free sample bags for you to take home.

Ethnic crafts

On the craft side there are some beautiful bags featured on pp 17 – 19 of the Traidcraft catalogue alongside ethnic jewellery, and we do stock some Tearcraft jewellery created in South Africa too. We have a delightful hand-carved giraffe, and the soapstone elephant book-holder and long slim wall hanging are both typical African items. We have handmade cards containing South African flower seeds for you to enjoy in your own gardens! Last, but not least, we stock two bars of soap (lavender and lemongrass) made by a social enterprise called Township Trades. This group is based in the Khayelitsha township in South Africa, and provides training for young people whose lives have been affected in some way by HIV/Aids.

Make a difference

The disparity in wealth between some of the elite footballers and some of our producers and their families has never been so great. One way in which we can all help to try to balance this up is to look for fairly traded goods whenever we can. So we hope to see you in the foyer shop searching for African items over the summer!
