Away from it all is a holiday scheme run by the Mothers’ Union in the UK. It enables needy families to have the summer holidays together that they could not otherwise afford. Find out more here

Gurkha Welfare Trust
The Gurkha Welfare Trust helps Gurkha veterans, their widows and their wider communities to live with dignity. In Nepal it provides financial, medical and community aid. In the UK it supports retired Gurkhas and their families who choose to settle here. Find out more here

Autism Bedfordshire 
Autism Bedfordshire helps autistic people build their confidence and social skills through social activities. It also looks after autistic people temporarily to give their families a break from caring responsibilities, and raises awareness of autism in the community. Find out more here

World Vision
This Christian charity helps children both during emergencies and in the longer term. In emergencies it provides them with food, shelter, hygiene kits and clean water, and in the longer term it also helps them to get education. Find out more here

Stroke Association
The Stroke Association provides support, communication and exercise-based rehabilitation for people who have suffered from stroke. It also funds research and campaigns to enable people affected by stroke to rebuild their lives. Find out more here

Bedford Women's Centre 
Bedford Women’s Centre supports women in the community to improve the quality of life for them and their families. It offers one to one support and mentoring, weekly workshops, training courses and support groups for women to promote healthy relationships and eradicate Domestic Abuse. Find out more here

Friends for Life trains volunteers in Bedford to befriend people in Nursing and Residential Homes, especially those who have no family and friends to visit them. Find out more here

This is a Bedford charity which is a community gathered around a commercial Real Bread bakery, supporting ex-offenders to resettle effectively into our local communities and not to reoffend. Ripple AfricaRipple Africa
This is a UK charity with many different projects in a small area of Malawi. One of these projects works with farmers and community groups and schools to plant and care for trees, both quick growing trees for firewood and slower-growing trees for timber. Mencap Local Bedford
Bedford Mencap Summer Playscheme
This Playscheme runs for 3 weeks in the summer school holidays. It enables children and young people with learning disabilities to take part in fun activitives and trips. It is staffed by a mixture of paid professional and volunteer helpers. Click here for more information

This charity provides holidays in a specially adapted property in Cornwall for children with long-term disabilities and life-limiting medical conditions and disabilities. Find out more here

This Foundation provides mosquito nets to malarial areas, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Each mosquito net is treated with a long-lasting insecticide and protects two people for three years. Find out more here

Book Aid International
Book Aid International sends selected new books (in English) to libraries and schools in Africa and refugee camps in Lebanon via a network of partners. Over 97% of the books are donated by the publishers. Click here for more information

SchhoolReaders Schoolreaders is a charity that improves childhood literacy by providing volunteers who listen to children reading in schools on a one-to-one basis. The children benefit from the individual attention of an adult and their self-esteem increases as they gain more confidence in their reading. Find out more here


ACCM ACCM works mainly in the Cauldwell Ward of Bedford, where there is a lot of deprivation and a high concentration of ethnic minority communities. It promotes women’s confidence and communication skills by supporting the Cauldwell Women’s Group, and it acts as a bridge between the community and the NHS, also working closely with Prostate Cancer UK and the Terence Higgins Trust. SMART Prebend Centre
The Prebend Centre is now run by SMART!, which has particular expertise in helping with drug and alcohol addiction. The Center is open every day from 8.30am to 1pm and provides a cereal breakfast and hot lunch. Visitors can also have showers, get their washing done, and seek help from the recovery workers, who provide advice, advocacy and signposting. Find out more here


Compass Children's Charity
This raises funds to support street children in Central America through street outreach, provision of a safe place to live, vocational training and legal support for survivors of human trafficking. It also campaigns to raise awareness of the issues in the UK. Find out more here


YWB Logo
Befrienders visit women detained at Yarl’s Wood Immigration and Removal Centre, a few miles from Bedford. If a detainee asks for a visitor, the Befrienders arrange for a volunteer to visit her once a week. Befrienders are sometimes the only person a detainee meets from outside the Centre. umeed partnership
Umeed Partnership brings educational opportunities to girls and women in Pakistan who would otherwise be trapped in desperate poverty, exclusion and deprivation. These opportunities are normally particularly limited for the minority Christian and Hindu communities. Find out more here

Angel Tree LogoBedford Prison Fellowship is a prayer group whose Angel Tree Project helps maintain family contacts by buying Christmas gifts for the children of men in Bedford prison, then wrapping and posting them. Messages written by the fathers are included in the gifts.
